Traditionally, the Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug. A highball or rocks glass works just as well. The most important thing is that the ingredients and the mug or glass be well chilled.

  1. Pour in vodka and lime
Pour EXACT vodka and freshly squeezed lime juice into a well-chilled copper mug.
  2. Add ice
Fill the cup generously with large ice cubes.
  3. Top up with ginger beer
Slowly pour well-chilled ginger beer over the ice.
  4. Stir briefly and garnish.
Stir the Moscow Mule gently and garnish with a lime wedge or cucumber slice. Serve immediately.

EXAKT Tip: Always add the ginger beer to the glass last, and then stir only briefly. This helps preserve as much carbonation as possible. For a spicier ginger kick, choose a stronger ginger beer instead of adding syrup or other ingredients to the drink.

Here’s how it tastes
Sparkling, spicy, and pleasantly fresh: The Moscow Mule has a distinct ginger kick that’s enlivened by the lime, giving it a slightly tart flavor. When well-chilled, the drink remains crisp, clean, and refreshing, with a drier character than many sweet long drinks.

Recipe story

How Vodka, Ginger Beer, and the Copper Mug Became a Cult Trio

Few cocktails are as closely associated with their glass as the Moscow Mule. Its origins are generally traced back to the early 1940s—but the story behind it is less clear-cut than is often claimed.

The story centers on John G. Martin, who at the time wanted to popularize vodka in the U.S., and Jack Morgan, owner of the Cock ’n’ Bull Pub and maker of his own ginger beer. According to a widely accepted version of the story, the idea to combine the two products with citrus juice originated in 1941. Hollywood is often cited as the birthplace of the drink, but other historical accounts place the first mixture in New York.

Even when it comes to the drink’s actual inventor, accounts differ. Wes Price, the bartender at the Cock ’n’ Bull, later claimed that he himself had created the drink. What is certain, therefore, is not so much who mixed the first Moscow Mule, but rather that the combination of vodka, ginger beer, and lime emerged during that time and was deliberately promoted.

The copper mug also played a crucial role in this. John G. Martin later even used snapshots of bartenders holding a vodka bottle and the distinctive mug to promote the drink in other bars. As a result, the copper mug became an unmistakable part of its identity.

To this day, the basic concept has changed surprisingly little: just a few ingredients, plenty of ice, and strong ginger beer. It is precisely this simplicity that makes the Moscow Mule a classic that requires no elaborate bartending techniques.
