A Bloody Mary isn’t shaken vigorously; instead, it’s stirred gently. This preserves its characteristic thick, smooth consistency.

EXAKT Tip: Add Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, salt, and pepper gradually, tasting as you go. This way, you can adjust the heat and seasoning exactly to your taste. Since this recipe doesn’t call for ice in the glass, the tomato juice and EXAKT Vodka should already be well chilled.
Here’s how it tastes
Robust, hearty, and pleasantly spicy: The Bloody Mary has a full-bodied, slightly thick texture and a distinctly spicy character. Fresh acidity and a subtle heat balance out the intense tomato flavor.
There are several stories surrounding the origins of the Bloody Mary—there is no single, indisputably verified inventor.
One of the best-known leads points to Fernand “Pete” Petiot, who worked at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris in the early 1920s and later claimed to have mixed an early version of the drink there using vodka and tomato juice. The American entertainer George Jessel also plays an important role in the history of the cocktail: a Bloody Mary made with vodka and tomato juice was first mentioned in writing in the U.S. under his name as early as 1939.
Petiot later explained that he had added spices, Worcestershire sauce, lemon, and a kick to the initially very simple mixture. This brought the drink closer to the spicy version we know today as the Bloody Mary.
The origin of the name is also not entirely clear. It is often associated with Queen Mary I of England, who became known by the nickname “Bloody Mary.” However, there are other explanations as well—which is why the origin of this name should be understood as a theory rather than a proven fact.
Today, the Bloody Mary is one of the most famous savory cocktails of all. Instead of a fixed set of seasonings, it allows for a lot of creativity: the key is striking the right balance between tomato, acidity, savory notes, and heat.
