When it comes to the Cosmopolitan, one thing matters above all else: it must be served really cold. That’s why the cocktail is shaken vigorously over ice and then strained into a pre-chilled glass without the ice.
1. Pre-chill the cocktail glass
Place the cocktail glass or martini glass in the refrigerator for a few minutes. Alternatively, you can fill it with ice cubes and let it sit while you prepare the cocktail.
A well-chilled glass ensures that the Cosmopolitan stays fresh longer and retains its elegant appeal.
2. Add the ingredients to the shaker
Add EXAKT Vodka, cranberry juice, Cointreau, and freshly squeezed lime juice to a cocktail shaker.
Next, fill the shaker generously with ice cubes. Fresh lime juice is especially important here. It adds acidity to the drink and prevents the cranberry and orange liqueur from tasting too sweet.
3. Shake vigorously
Close the shaker and shake vigorously for about 10 to 15 seconds.
This doesn’t just chill the cocktail. As the ice melts slightly, it gently dilutes the ingredients, blending them into a harmonious drink.
The shaker should feel really cold on the outside. Then the Cosmopolitan is ready to be poured into the glass.
4. Strain finely
Remove the ice from the pre-chilled cocktail glass and strain the Cosmopolitan into the glass through a bar strainer.
If you want to avoid small ice chips or fruit fibers, you can also use a fine strainer. This gives the cocktail its particularly clear and elegant appearance.
5. Garnish and serve
To finish, squeeze a thin strip of lime or orange zest over the glass. This releases the delicate essential oils from the zest onto the surface of the cocktail.
Then add the zest to the glass or place it decoratively on the rim. It’s best to serve the Cosmopolitan immediately.
Be a bit sparing with the cranberry juice. The Cosmopolitan should remain a fresh vodka cocktail and not turn into a cranberry long drink.
The characteristic color is therefore a clear, bright rose to pink, not a dark red.
If you want to serve this drink with extra elegance, you can chill the vodka and cranberry juice along with the glass. This will keep the Cosmopolitan pleasantly cool for longer.
The Cosmopolitan thrives on the interplay of fruit, acidity, and subtle sweetness.
The cranberry adds a pleasantly tart fruitiness to the drink. Fresh lime juice provides a lively burst of acidity, and the orange liqueur ties both components together with a subtle sweetness and an aromatic citrus note.
The vodka intentionally takes a back seat in terms of flavor, giving the cocktail its clean structure.
The result is a fresh, fruity, and slightly tart drink. It’s significantly more balanced and less sweet than its striking pink color might initially suggest.
Pink, elegant, and inextricably linked to the 1990s: Few cocktails epitomize a particular era as much as the Cosmopolitan.
Yet the story of its origins is surprisingly complex. A drink called the Cosmopolitan can already be found in cocktail books from the 1920s and 1930s. However, these early recipes had very little in common with today’s blend of vodka, cranberry juice, and lime.
There are several stories about the origins of the modern Cosmopolitan.
Bartender Cheryl Cook is often associated with a variation she is said to have mixed in Miami in the 1980s. Her recipe consisted of citrus vodka, Triple Sec, lime juice, and just enough cranberry juice to give the cocktail its striking pink color.
New York bartender Toby Cecchini also played an important role in shaping the Cosmopolitan as we know it today. In 1988, at the famous restaurant The Odeon, he served a version made with citrus vodka, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, and cranberry juice. This recipe is now considered one of the most important foundations of the modern Cosmopolitan.
The pink cocktail eventually became an international pop culture phenomenon thanks to the TV series “Sex and the City.” Carrie Bradshaw and her friends regularly ordered the Cosmopolitan. As a result, the drink became well known far beyond the New York bar scene in the late 1990s.
Today, the Cosmopolitan is much more than just a cocktail from a particular TV series or era. When mixed well, it shows why it has established itself as a modern classic. It’s uncomplicated, elegant, fresh, and has a color that’s instantly recognizable.
