An espresso martini takes just a few minutes to make. To get a nice frothy head, the key is an aromatic espresso, plenty of ice, and a good shake.

  1. Pre-chill the glass
Pre-chill the martini or coupe glass so that the Espresso Martini stays cold for as long as possible.
  2. Preparing espresso
Brew a fresh espresso. It should be aromatic and strong so that the coffee flavor stands out even alongside vodka and coffee liqueur.
  3. Add ingredients to the shaker
Pour EXACTLY vodka, coffee liqueur and espresso into a cocktail shaker.
  4. Add ice
Fill the shaker generously with ice cubes.
  5. Shake vigorously
Shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes noticeably cold. This vigorous shaking incorporates air and promotes the typical foam layer. Professional cocktail guides also recommend vigorous shaking for temperature, dilution, and texture.
  6. Straining
Strain the Espresso Martini into the pre-chilled glass. For an especially smooth surface, you can also pour it through a fine strainer.
  7. Garnish & Serve
After straining, garnish the espresso martini with coffee beans and serve immediately.

Recipe story

Espresso Martini – A Classic Coffee-Based Cocktail from London

The Espresso Martini is younger than many classic cocktails, but it has long since secured a permanent spot on bar menus worldwide. Its history begins in the early 1980s in London: At the Soho Brasserie, bartender Dick Bradsell created a drink made with vodka and espresso, which was initially served under the name “Vodka Espresso.” In the 1990s, this evolved into the Espresso Martini as we know it today.

What makes this cocktail special is the interplay of contrasts: bold roasted flavors and a hint of bitterness from the espresso, sweetness from the coffee liqueur, and a clean spirit base. With EXAKT Vodka, the coffee remains the star of the show, while the vodka gives the drink structure and that signature kick.

But for a great Espresso Martini, it’s not just about the ingredients. The drink should be shaken vigorously until ice-cold. This blends the ingredients, gives the cocktail a smoother texture, and creates the characteristic frothy head on top.

The Espresso Martini is best served immediately after mixing in a pre-chilled martini or coupe glass. A strong drink for after dinner, a party, or those moments when coffee alone just isn’t enough.
