It’s best to prepare the drink right in a sturdy tumbler. A tip for the mint: handle it gently so it releases its flavor without being crushed unnecessarily.

  1. Prepare mint and sugar
Place mint leaves and raw cane sugar in the glass and gently press down with a pestle.
  2. Add vodka and lemon
Add EXAKT vodka and freshly squeezed lemon juice and mix thoroughly.
  3. Add ice to the glass
Fill the glass generously with ice cubes.
  4. Top up with mineral water
Top up with well-chilled mineral water and stir briefly and gently. Garnish with a sprig of mint if desired and serve immediately.

EXACT tip: Always add the mineral water to the glass last and then stir only briefly. This way, as much carbonation as possible is retained and the Lemon Vodka Smash stays nice and fizzy.

That’s how it tastes
Citrusy, vibrant, and pleasantly light: The Lemon Vodka Smash combines crisp citric acidity with fresh herbal notes and a subtle sweetness. The carbonation adds extra lightness, while plenty of ice ensures a cool, uncomplicated character.

Recipe story

From the Julep to the Smash: A Cocktail with History

The Smash belongs to the historic American cocktail families. Its roots date back at least to the mid-19th century. Jerry Thomas’s famous 1862 cocktail book, *How to Mix Drinks*, features brandy, gin, and whiskey smashes. At the time, Thomas described the smash, in essence, as a smaller-sized julep.

The early recipes were surprisingly simple: spirits, sugar, a little water, mint, and plenty of ice. Lemon wasn’t necessarily included yet. It wasn’t until modern interpretations that fresh citrus fruits and other herbs became typical ingredients in many smashes.

This means that the Lemon Vodka Smash is not an original historical recipe, but rather a modern variation on this classic family of drinks. Vodka replaces traditional spirits such as whiskey, brandy, or gin, while lemon and sparkling water make the drink lighter and more refreshing.

What remains is the basic concept behind the Smash: simple ingredients, fresh flavors, and a drink that doesn’t require any complicated bartending techniques.
